If you do need a snack before bed, or a good option for a light dinner, this recipe is a great bet. Chickpeas are rich in vitamin B6, which is important for the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. In this recipe it’s paired with basil, which has been used for centuries as a mild sedative in Western herbal medicine too.

1 x 400g can of chickpeas, drained
juice of ½ lemon
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 bunch fresh basil, leaves torn
sea salt and black pepper

Serves: 1

Place all the ingredients in a blender or food processor, season with salt and pepper and blend into a thick, luscious dip. Serve with carrots, celery sticks or other veggies.
